Lion FLOSSIES!

Updated: Jun 2, 2020

Haha these were so fun to make and you can use almost any bun recipe for these but thought to share the decoration technique for those interested. This can be used to make all sorts of drawings on buns including emoji drawings or other character drawings.

Before sending your buns off to the oven, remember to draw the eyes and mouth (+ whiskers, which I clearly forgot hahaha xp) of the lion

  1. Mix 1/2 tsp cocoa powder with a bit of hot water until you get to a fluid paste like consistency.

  2. Using the blunt end of the toothpick, pick up some of the chocolate paste and start drawing on the proofed bun.

  3. Remember to not egg wash over your drawing haha otherwise all your effort will be wasted! It will get lightly browned in the oven (I baked mine for 13 minutes at 190 degrees celcius)

After the buns have cooled completely, it's time to add the lion's flossy mane

  1. Squiggle a circle of mayonnaise (I used Kewpie Mayonnaise and it comes in a convenient squirt bottle) around the circumference of the lion's face --this will mark the boundary of the lion's face

  2. Squiggle another circle of mayonnaise about 1/2 cm below that first line of mayonnaise -- this gives the lion a more fluffy mane

  3. You can squiggle a third line of mayonnaise, but I found it a bit excessive and made my lion flossy look a little like it was having a bad hair day haha so two is a good number to stop at. (My buns were slightly smaller than palm sized, about 38g of dough per bun + 2g of butter stuffing)

  4. Loosen the pork floss in a bowl and slowly paste the floss onto the bun to form the lion's mane--it should stay on the bun because of the mayonnaise. This method is a bit more time consuming than simply rolling the bun in pork floss, but it does ensure zero wastage of pork floss by keeping all the pork floss not on the bun clean and also allows for a bit more control as to how the mane is going to look.

And that's it, you're done!
